Round 5
THE single-seater Formula Volkswagen field certainly kept busy at Phakisa Freeway on Saturday. These open-wheel racers delivered some of the closest racing from the series seen yet.
The action started early on and racers who achieved were the ones who had worked hard. Racers who didn’t achieve worked even harder, but found themselves on the wrong end of the motorsport luck equation.
The racers that it did work out for were Simon Moss (38) in the Terry Moss Racing car, Chad van Beurden (16) in the Beurden Construction / Square Waste Removal entry and Gordon Connelly (3) in the OCC / Bravo Holdings / Cowan Signs car.
These three were the top achieving drivers on the day, claiming first, second and third overall respectively.
In qualifying Moss managed to set a blistering time of 1,32.68s which set him well clear of the rest of the field he manage to grab pole position by just under half a second!
Race one in the Formula Volkswagen series proved the most action-packed on the day. With the safety car coming out on lap 3, Moss had to fight hard as he had edged out a gap of more than 2 seconds over second place man Van Beurden. When it was all go again Simon had some technical problems with the cooling in his car which set his pace down a little causing him to fight hard with Van Beurden towards the latter stages of the 10 lap race. After his car was over heating it seemed sensible to nurture the car and bring it home safe, which is what he did well and managed a creditable 2nd place.
In race 2 Moss was not there to play, he had a point to prove and he shore did prove it. Simon had run away with the race by lap 3, after the 10 lap race Moss had taken victory by more than 9 second, setting the fastest lap in race 1 and race 2 showed how dominate this young man is. He took overall victory on the day and set the track lap record in race 1 as well.
So far this season Moss has taken
6 pole positions
6 victories
3 x second place
Moss now leads the FVW Championship by 40 points with 4 rounds remaining.
