Round 4 of the SA Championship took place at Phakisa Freeway, the International race circuit situated in Welkom.

Right from the start of the race weekend, defending Champion Simon Moss (38) was on the button setting the pace throughout the Friday practice sessions, from 2009 FVW Champion Jayde Kruger (8) and following in a close 3rd was ex Formula Ford Champion Robert Wolk (41).

Qualifying was deemed to be a thriller as Moss had solved his braking issues, Kruger and Wolk were adamant they wouldn't let the youngster take the pole position.
Qualifying was a 12min session, Moss was on track for pole potion through out the 12min session, Wolk managed a distant 2nd, managing to pip Kruger who had to settle for 3rd position. This meant Simon Moss had clinched pole position by 0.4 seconds, the largest margin between 1st and 2nd during qualifying, this season so far.

Race 1

Off the line Wolk had a cracker of a start edging past Moss, Kruger followed in pursuit but brilliant defending from the champion kept Kruger abbey. Moss had a fight on his hand to catch the current leader Wolk, as the race went on Moss managed to close right up to Wolk setting blistering lap times and the fastest lap by 0.2 of a second. The front two were well clear of Kruger by now, however on the 2nd last corner Moss pulled a maneuver on Wolk for the lead and over cooked it, an error which sent him off the circuit, with less than 80m remaining to the finish line.

After the race Moss said: “I unfortunately battled to find grip off the standing start, which allowed Wolk to pass me off the line, I wasn’t going to let him slip away and pushed very hard. I was in the dirty air behind Wolk which causes a loss to the down force from the front and rear wings, upsetting the handling characteristics of the car. However I managed to close the gap and planned a calculated pass later in the race. My passing attempt was jeopardized by a back-marker on the last lap, which caused my off track excursion, ultimately dropping me down the field. The team had prepared perfect car, we were the fastest and had to accept that lady luck was just not with us at the time”.

Race 2

Wolk was eager to get the hole shot off the start however the 38 special of Simon moss had the edge and defended, from then on Moss opened the gap and accelerated away from the field opening a huge gap, claiming victory over Wolk and then Kruger in pursuit. It was evident that the 2010 Champion was back on track , clearly notifying his rivals, of his intent for the rest of the season.

Moss stated “I can produce when the entire package is working, like last season.

The next round will be in Port Elizabeth on the 6th of August.
